Course Objectives:

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

•  Define the causes and forms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

•  Gain a better understanding of how COPD affects the healthcare industry and medical field as a whole

•  Identify the major risk factors for developing COPD and discuss nursing interventions to minimize or prevent these risk factors

•  Know the clinical presentation of COPD patients

•  Describe the  pathogenesis and pathophysiology of COPD

•  Identify precipitants of COPD exacerbation

•  Describe the nursing management of COPD patients

•  Develop a teaching plan for patients with COPD including a comprehensive review of indicated medications

•  Describe the major complications of COPD and identify strategies to prevent these complications

•  Identify patients with COPD exacerbation requiring hospital admission

•  Develop a sustainable program for managing COPD patients

Overview/Description

According to American Lung Association, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death in the United States. More than 11 million have been diagnosed, and an additional 24 million are estimated to have the disease without even knowing it. In Understanding COPD, participants will get an overview of the causes and forms of COPD, what it entails, and the latest evidence-based treatment and management of patients with COPD.
